holistic therapies

Our treatment plans are always integrated under the principles of Chinese medicine. As a new patient, you will have a consultation to discuss why you’ve come, and one of our practitioners will do a thorough constitutional assessment. We may also discuss a dietary plan, and you will leave the appointment with a customized formula of Chinese herbs and/or supplements. All of our practitioners are deeply experienced in the modalities we use and have trained under clinic director Dr. Heiner Fruehauf for years.

1. Consultation

A combination of modern medical intake and noninvasive classical Chinese medicine diagnostics to identify treatment priorities. Includes examination of pulse and tongue patterns, identification of energy flow blockages, and other nonstructural indicators for system imbalance. For all patients, including those with emergent or chronic illness such as respiratory disorders, digestive issues, circulatory problems, and cancer, or chronic inflammatory diseases like chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, or Lyme disease.

2. Customized Chinese Herbal Formulas and Natural Food Supplements

Once we have mapped out a treatment plan, we build on traditional 2,000-year-old (and counting) prescriptions, tailored to address your specific constitutional weak points, remove toxins, and revitalize degenerated cells and tissues. In combination with an individualized supplement regimen, these serve as your custom “formula” support after you return home.

3. Personal Dietary Plan

Everyone knows that “food is medicine,” and holistic nutritionists and Chinese dietary science agree. Food is an important part of your health – not just as part of weight control, or eating more “superfoods,” but as basic fortification of your health. Everyone is different, and so are our food tolerances. We specialize in identifying foods that are beneficial to your system and those that may not be, even if you don’t seem to react overtly allergic to them. Patients receive a list of foods to stock up on and a list of foods to avoid. Sugar will be on the latter.

4. Body-Based Therapies

Each visit will include a body-based treatment to jump-start your healing and enhance your system’s ability to absorb and respond to your herbal regimen. A treatment will consist of acupuncture and/or moxibustion – modalities that unblock and invigorate your body’s vital current of electromagnetic bio-information, referred to as qi flow by practitioners of Chinese medicine. Acupuncture treatments may include an individualized selection of acupuncture points stimulated with acupuncture needles, acupressure, moxibustion, tuning forks, essential oils, herbal poultices and/or gemstones. Depending on your therapeutic needs, acupuncture may be replaced or supplemented with a different manual modality such as cranial sacral therapy or East Asian bodywork. Lifestyle recommendations (e.g. sleep hygiene, home hydrotherapy, qigong practices) might be included in this part of your visit.
