The Living Organism

UPDATE ON THE VIEW POINT INN RENOVATION
November 29, 2022

A view of the bones of the first floor, inside The Viewpoint Inn.

After years of neglect, the Viewpoint Inn is finally awakening from a long and much deserved rest.

The footings have been poured and the stem walls of the main structure have been rebuilt. The building has been lowered onto its new foundation. The subterranean space below is the future home of the European-style naturecure spa facilities, the largest investment in the space thus far.

The industrious team at White Dog Construction and Square Nail Carpentry is beginning to replace and rehabilitate her old bones, which have weakened and disintegrated over time. They are replacing the joists and wall mounts, roof supports and other critical boney structures.

After falling into disrepair, the Inn sat unguarded and alone for a number of years. She has been toughened by nature and the slow drip of Pacific Northwest rain. Pieces of her have been carried away by fans of the Twilight movies, a gestural reminder of her role in history. A host of critters and humans also used her for shelter during the years she lay vacant. She is sore and timeworn, but has never been fully abandoned. With our efforts now, the building is beginning to breathe again.

The Living Organism

At this point in the restoration of the old Viewpoint Inn, we find ourselves humbled by the realization that we are now the stewards of this historic structure and the land she rests on. It is our hope that the reincarnated building and land offers healing and breathes life into those who occupy her, as much as those inhabitants offer back. To that end, we view the relationship between the building, land, and occupants as symbiotic so that together they will constitute the living organism.

The additional building in the images below shows the rebuild of the chicken coop. The structure will house the Cedar Enzyme Bath treatments, a unique Japanese detox modality. The decision was made early on to locate that facility away from the main building due to the strong fragrance of the therapeutic enzymes and fermenting cedar chips. The old chicken coop was the perfect place to provide this service.
