Foundation: A High Altitude View Point

UPDATE ON THE VIEW POINT INN RENOVATION
July 21, 2022

Humility is the solid foundation of all virtues.
- Confucius

The prolonged spring rains put a six week halt to work on the foundation but also provided a relatively cool entry into summer. The construction team is making great progress now!

Crown Point in the Columbia River Gorge on the land directly below where the View Point Inn building sits.

The tireless crew at White Dog Construction and Square Nail Carpentry finally finished pouring the footings and rebuilding the stem walls of the main structure. This subterranean space below the main building is the future home of the European-style naturecure spa facilities. The team also recently met to discuss lowering the house onto its new foundation. They’re still a few weeks out from that but are framing in anticipation of removing the supports and setting the building in place.

Next Steps

The building will be delicately lowered onto its new footings, the support girder beams used to stabilize and raise the main structure will be removed, the concrete floors will be poured, and the building's heating, electrical, and water base infrastructure will be installed.

Stewardship and Humility

Exciting progress, but to step back from the process itself and recognize that we are breathing life back into a building with such a rich history, one that has hosted luminaries like President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Charlie Chaplin, is awe inspiring. To acknowledge the land the View Point Inn was built on and the Native American tribes who were there before us is humbling; we can’t help but have a profound sense of stewardship and humility as we move forward.

Stay tuned!

AUTHOR'S NOTE: WE WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE SILETZ INDIANS, THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES OF THE GRAND RONDE, THE COWLITZ INDIAN TRIBE, AND THE CASCADES INDIAN TRIBE. TRIBAL HISTORY ALONG THE COLUMBIA RIVER IS COMPLICATED, SO OUR RESEARCH ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE LAND IS ONGOING.
